With increased attention to personal space and outdoor living, outdoor furnishings are suddenly a pragmatic answer to safely socializing or just getting fresh air. With this in mind, we focus on two well-designed options for getting some much needed friluftsliv, American style, even if it’s on the balcony, patio or on a back lawn.

Combining memories of the ubiquitous lightweight folding lawnchair of our collective childhoods and a lot of deadstock polypropylene webbing, experimental design collective  Amlgmatd has reimagined vintage materials that would otherwise be headed to the landfill into cheerful lightweight hexagonal stools. The award-winning upcycled WEBSTR stool comes in a variety of tropical colorways inspired by the natural hues of Miami and can be found at https://www.amlgmatd.com/floridiana-webstr

At Lawn Chair USA, the classic American folding lawnchair is being hand-produced at a small family-owned factory. All the production - from weaving and frame molding to assembly - is done on-site and supports the local economy of tiny Walthourville, Georgia, located southeast of Savannah. Lawn Chair USA will even teach you how to re-web your existing lawn chairs by providing step-by-step video instructions on their website. If DIY is not your stripe, you can always buy them on the MoMa store.
